Beep bop. Beep boop bop. That didn’t make sense, did it? That’s because machines need human translators: someone to analyze the data and guide decisions.

It’s a symbiotic relationship where man and machine must work together. And so far, we’ve gotten pretty good at it. Look around. When’s the last time you went a day without using Google Maps, face ID, or autocorrect? Ever made an e-payment or conversed with a chatbot? That’s all artificial intelligence (AI). It’s what we rely on to make life more convenient. And guess what? When AI is paired with the power of people, it can have the same effect on your business. The difference is, in business, that convenience can be a big deal.

Human intelligence combined with AI can drive efficiency and profitability for any sized business. Lloyd Danzig, chairman and founder of the International Consortium for the Ethical Development of Artificial Intelligence, says, “businesses can now leverage data to make better predictions, operate more efficiently, and drive a superior customer experience.”

AI opened the door to solving problems that used to look unsolvable. Chatbots are improving the customer service experience. Small startups can tackle more granular problems, typically left to big companies with bigger infrastructure. Still, many companies struggle to incorporate AI processes to meet their business goals. So, where to begin?

Start by asking the right questions.

  • Do you have the executive support to embark on a new AI project?
  • Have you clearly defined your business objectives and desired outcomes?
  • Are your expectations fair and achievable?
  • Is your budget big enough to support short and long-term AI goals?
  • Do you have the proper I.T. infrastructure to deploy your AI solution?

The list goes on. Before taking the plunge, IBM fellow, Rama Akkiraju, warns, “Where I see the most mistakes being made in implementing AI-infused solutions is expectation setting and expectation mismatch. Overpromising can lead to severe disappointments. AI vendors have to be honest and upfront about what’s possible, what’s not possible, and the time it will likely take to derive value…What’s possible on day one and month five could be different. A well-designed AI solution can learn from user feedback and improve over time.” False expectations will leave you feeling discouraged. People are set up expecting a perfect system at the start. Results take patience, feedback, and investment.

Learn to build on small successes. Begin with simple concepts that have room for growth. “Experiment and explore in small use cases, better understand the strengths and areas that need further improvement, and have a roadmap for how those areas will be addressed by the vendor or company itself and expand on initial successes,” Akkiraju advises. “Wherever that path has been followed, I have seen great success.”
